The BWWGA Committee

Countdown Starts to the .... Season

Ready-Set-Go -- Announcing the 2016 BWWGA Season!

The BWWGA Committee has been busy organizing a new season of activities and is excited to share with you some new event formats planned for 2016 in addition to our standard program. Please take a look at the updated Events Calendar and the new Calendar View tab and start marking your diaries for some fun!!

During our last Annual General Meeting we asked questions and received good suggestions from our membership. We planned 2016 accordingly and have added a few more competitive events for everyone on both weekdays and on weekends. We hope these will create more interest and challenge for everyone, including the low-handicap players. For example, the Ringer Tournament will pay both gross and net prizes and the weekend $5 Stroke Tourneys will do the same. Of course, you do not need to be a low-handicap player to compete. Please check out the Event Descriptions tab for more information.

Last year we tried to engage the high-handicappers -- thus the Boot Camp, a Wine and Nine social, and weekly Come and Play/Mentoring meet ups. We will build on the success of some of these, in addition to the clinics, scrambles and other fun formats. We have decided to discontinue the weekly meet-ups due to lack of participation last year.

In addition to participating in BWWGA events, we would like to encourage our members to join the Bretton Woods mixed golf events (usually held on weekends, included in our Events Calendar). If you are uncertain about signing up for these events the Pro Shop is open to helping meet your concerns - where feasible - so your feedback is necessary in order to make any needed adjustments. We hope you will consider signing up for some of the mixed events this year. Check out the BW Tournament Descriptions on the BW website. Should you have any questions feel free to communicate them to Danielle Lucca and/or Kate Mathison via our [email protected] mailbox.

Once the snow melts, we very much look forward to seeing you on the golf course! If you are a new member or maybe just have some questions, you might enjoy our FAQ page. Email us with any other interesting questions.

The BWWGA Committee

Countdown Starts to the 2015 Season!!

Your BWWGA committee is excited to present a full calendar of events again this year. Our schedule is available on the Events Calendar and Event Descriptions pages here on the website. You will see all of your favorite Tournaments, Scrambles and Stablefords that have been the staple of our events. The regional teams are lined up and ready for some good competition. We are looking forward to seeing you out there very soon!

Come out of your Shell! Did you know that about 70 percent of our members are high handicap/no handicap players? With this in mind, we have introduced a few new activities that we thought would entice the less competitive folks to get out on the course more often. We hope to see many of you at our Come and Play sessions, Mentor Mondays, Boot Camp, and Nine and Wine events. We can help each other to get over our inhibitions, meet other fun people and try to laugh a little more!!! Reach out to the Committee members if you need a pep talk--we really want our club members to be engaged in the sport and we are willing to help support you as needed.

WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS

Boot Camp

Fielder sent to Members:

Do you want to make big improvements in your game? Are you interested in a Women's Golf Boot Camp??

BWWGA and the Bretton Woods golf pro shop are in the process of organizing a "Chip, Putt and Hit" Boot Camp designed for women golfers who are in the earlier stages of developing their strokes. It is being planned for April 28 - May 1, 2015 and will be run by the Bretton Woods professional golf staff. The agenda is being developed and is expected to include video analysis as well as lots of fun and challenging exercises covering chipping, putting and full strokes. This will be a wonderful opportunity for players to get a jump start on the season and to meet others of similar ability to play with. You would be hard-pressed to find a better value for this type of program, and there is no need to travel (other than a round trip to Bretton Woods!). Another benefit of learning from our pros is that you can continue to grow and work with them over time.

If you would be interested in the Boot Camp, we would appreciate hearing from you by return email to [email protected] no later than March 25. In order for us to firm up the offering, we need to be able to show that there is sufficient interest. Participation is limited, and golfers are expected to commit to the four days of the event. No need to reply if this is not for you.

_______ Yes, I am generally interested, but these dates don't work for me; please keep me in mind if there would be enough interest for a repeat event.

________Yes, I am interested in a Boot Camp:

___________ that runs from 10:00 am - 12:00 noon each day at a price of $250 for 4 days, or

___________ that runs from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm each day (1 hour lunch break) at a price of $500 for 4 days

(Note: Please check all that apply. Only one of these formats would be selected for the program, depending on interest.)

Name: _____________________________________________

Thank you for your response and we will announce the decision as soon as we can.

Participation is limited, and golfers are expected to commit to the four days of the event.

If you would be interested in enrolling, we would appreciate hearing from you by email to [email protected] no later than July 17.

The program is designed for women golfers who are in the earlier stages of developing their game. Interclub Events

Kenwood Interclub Event - Wednesday August 5, 2015

Contact Phyllis Peter-Mallard at [email protected] by August 1st if you wish to participate in the Kenwood Interclub event which will be held on Wednesday August 5th.

By way of background, the interclub program was started several years ago by a woman from Kenwood to provide an opportunity for higher handicappers who aren't eligible to play in MPG to have a chance to play at other area clubs. Over the years the other 6 clubs dropped out of the program so its just us and Kenwood this year. We have been given 10 spots this year. While preference will be given to higher handicap players, if there's space and interest, lower handicappers are also welcome to play.

The cost of $40 (charged through the club billing system) covers carts, lunch and golf ball prizes (greens fees are comped).

NEW CHAIR OF THE BWWGA COMMITTEE

Caroline will be stepping down as Chair of the BWWGA Committee. She was hoping to make it to our annual meeting in November and inform you of her decision in person but, unfortunately, this will not be possible. Danielle Lucca has done a fantastic job this season as Vice Chair and Secretary and has volunteered to take over her position. She will serve as Chair for only one year as her BWWGA three year term will be up in November 2016. Please send an e-mail to BWWGACommittee @ gmail.com by October 21, 2015 if you have any objections.

Most Improved Players

the formula was changed in 2014. We are now using the USGA formula to determine the award winners.

  • The maximum beginning USGA 18-hole handicap index is 40.4.
  • The March 15 handicap index will be used as the starting handicap and the October 31 handicap index will be used as the ending handicap.

The most improved golfer is determined as follows: Add twelve to the players starting handicap index (Value A). Add twelve to the player’s ending handicap index (Value B). Divide Value A by Value B, calculate to three decimal points. This value is the highest improvement factor. The player with the highest improvement factor is the most improved player.

  • Canada Cup (awarded to most improved player with an ending handicap of 20 and above)
  • BWWGA Trophy (awarded to most improved player with an ending handicap of under 20 )

Kate Mathison

I started playing golf in my early 30's to be able to play in fundraisers at the University Of Minnesota when I was the Associate Athletic Director. Once I started playing, I fell in love with the game. I love being outside, love the challenge of each hole and the camaraderie that game allows to develop. I look at golf as playing chess on acres of land that involves both physical and mental exercise. At this point, I could play golf every day possible with the goal of improving my handicap. I think that much of the physical components of the game are counter- intuitive and one of the biggest "aha" moments is when I realized that in order to get the ball to go further, you did not have to swing harder!

The highlight of my career has been our trip last year to Pebble Beach and birdieing the 7th hole.

I am very excited about becoming a member at Bretton Woods and hope that we can have many women, regardless of handicap, play together as we did at Montgomery Village.

Kate Mathison joined Bretton Woods in March 2015 from Montgomery Village and is serving as BWWGA Handicap Chair.

COME OUT OF YOUR SHELL!

A warm welcome to new members joining us in 2015. New members will be accepted all season long, so please tell your friends!

WRAP UP OF THE 2015 SEASON

The BWWGA Annual Meeting was held on November 8 with and was attended by 35 members. The day began with a round of 9 holes, followed by a luncheon, during which the committee solicited feedback from members on a range of issues. Afterwards, the formal annual meeting was hosted by Danielle Lucca, the 2016 BWWGA Chairperson. Please see attached link for more information about the agenda.

It was announced at the meeting that the 2016 BWWGA Committee will consist of: Danielle Lucca, Candy Herlihy, Kate Mathison, Roberta Grupe, Christine Ebrahimzadeh, and Laura Chen. Our thanks to Caroline Kahn and Katherine Pan for their dedicated service on the committee this year; their contributions were very much appreciated and we will certainly miss them in 2016.

A sincere thank you to the pros and staff for helping to make this a fun and successful year--we could not have done it without them. Thanks to all the members who came and played your hearts out this year. We look forward to seeing you out there during the off season as we hunker down and plan some fun activities for next year. Have a happy holiday season and best wishes from your committee members.
